Interview: Medieval Conflicts

By: Ciaran | Posted On: Monday 4 February 2008

Welcome to another feature on TheCrysisHQ.com! This weeks feature highlights another great total conversion mod for Crysis. We sit down with the leader of the mod for an up close and personal interview about his mod, Medieval Conflicts.

Medieval Conflicts is a first person, medieval total conversion for Crysis. Set during the Hundred Years’ War, it will be a battle between England and France. The mod will feature a unique combat system that allows for skilled blocking and attacking. In other words timing will be a key factor in playing the game. Our maps will be based on real, historical battles from the Hundred Years’ War. Each map will be unique and will require a different style of gameplay to succeed. A few will center around using the vehicles at your disposal to attack and others will focus more on your sword fighting skills to achieve victory. With Medieval Conflicts we hope to create something that will hold true to the history of such an important period of time while making a challenging yet fun experience.

TheCrysisHQ: What was your inspiration to do a medieval styled mod?

Bromley: Well, first off I have been online gaming since about 2004. I mainly played Battlefield 1942, and for bf1942 there was a mod called "Siege", which was roughly based on several random medieval battles and made up ones. Mind you, it was very fun and I played it on a regular basis, it was my favorite mod for my favorite game at the time. Since there arn't many mods out there with a medieval theme that are fun to continually play, I wanted to start my own, not to mention I have loved medieval warfare since I was very young.

TCHQ: Since the mod is still in its infancy, what is the overall goal you are wanting to achieve?

Bromley: My team and I, are hoping to make a mod that is both fun and challenging to players. We are going to have the mod as accurate to the time period as we can while still introducing new gamemodes and fun gameplay. We plan on having several major releases, each adding new vehicles, maps, weapons, and much more.

TCHQ: What sort of characters will we see in the mod?

Bromley: Since the mod is based on the Hundred Years War, the characters will basically be normal soldiers from both the French army and English army in the first release. There will be different characters for different classes, so don't expect to see a swordsman running around with a crossbow. Later on we are planning on possibly adding some sort of French militia.

TCHQ: Why do a Crysis mod instead of another game?

Bromley: Originally Medieval Conflicts was going to be for BF2142, but we decided to switch Crysis. Crysis offers alot of things that other game engines dont such as fully destructable buildings. The graphics are the best out there right now. It also allows for alot of things that other engines can't have. As well, Crysis has a fairly large modding community that helps each other out all the time. Not to mention the sandbox editor is the best map editor out there for any game, it is very easy to learn and use, and the CTRL+G feature (puts you instantly ingame to try out your map) is extremely useful.

TCHQ: Around how long have you been planning/making Medieval Conflicts?

Bromley: I got the idea of making a medieval mod in about September 07, me and my friend/ mod co-leader VertigoSFX officially started the mod in October.

TCHQ: What all will be in this mod once it is completed?

Bromley: We plan on having many medieval era vehicles and weapons, as well as many maps and destructable enviroments. We plan on also heavily modifying the combat system and drastically chaning player attributes.

TCHQ: Can you tell us about any of the weapons? Or how many weapons you have planned?

Bromley: Each team will have quite a few weapons for multiple uses. We will have shortswords, longswords, bows and crossbows, axe's, polearms and more for both teams.

TCHQ: Anything you are most proud of so far?

Bromley: As a leader, I am very proud of the hard work my whole team has been doing since the start of this mod. I am also proud of the models our team has been producing for each media update.

TCHQ: What made you start creating the mod?

Bromley: I used to play Battlefield 2 alot, infact more than anyone should. Eventually I reached the top rank and had absolutley nothing to do with all my spare computer time, so I wanted to make an enjoyable medieval mod. I had previously lead several mods so I was interested in trying it again.

TCHQ: How many maps do you have planned?

Bromley: We havn't really planned how many maps we will have yet, we will have most of the battles from the Hundred Years War as well as a few made up ones to make things fun and unique. For sure we will have more than 10 maps though, but the first release may have 3-4.

TCHQ: The mod seems to be very historically accurate, is this a big factor in the mod?

Bromley: Yes it is very important. People always like historically accurate mods, so it is important we encorporate that along with good gameplay to make a great mod. Although too much historical accuracy/realism can get boring.

TCHQ: Do you have a projected release date?

Bromley: We can't say for sure when our first release will be, if we are very lucky maybe at the end of the year, but most likely sometime in 2009.

I would like to thank Bromley for taking time out of his schedule to sit down and have a chat with us about the mod. Be sure and check out the links below for more information.
