Game Of The Month - November

Wednesday 5 December 2007 | Post A Comment

December 3, 2007 - With all the videogames that are released each and every month, it can be quite a difficult task to decide which title to spend your hard-earned money on, especially in this action packed Fall of 2007. Granted, you could go by our review scores alone and weed through the long list of names to find something that scored high or low, but who has time for that kind of research?

Luckily, your friends at IGN.com offer a monthly tribute to the very best game for each platform every month. While some of us often chime in with our comments at the end of reviews, the reviews on IGN, for the most part, are primarily written by one editor; in this feature, we get all of the editors on a particular channel to vote for our Game of the Month.

How does it work? Simple. Any game released in the past month is eligible for the award and is taken through a battery of tests by every editor on that particular channel. After we've finished evaluating each game that comes down the pipeline, we put our heads together and decide on a single "best of" winner that's worthy of the "IGN Game of the Month" title. Pretty straightforward, don't you think? Now that we have the guidelines out of the way, let's move on and congratulate this month's winner...

Hopefully a transcript or an audio recording will be available later, but in the mean time there are at least two informative reports from Gamasutra and Develop.

After his keynote this morning at the 2007 Game Developers Conference in Lyon (presented by Gamasutra parent CMP), he told Gamasutra that such a key gameplay concept “...has to be something that goes across platforms, singleplayer, and multiplayer.”

“We had what we called the suit playground," Yerli explained. "The nano suit was played in a playground. There was a little map; you could play it a hundred times against respawning enemies. You just killed them in a hundred ways.”

“And if you have fun in that kind of playground, you have a formula that works,” he told Gamasutra. “It’s called a middlegame.” You can take five minutes of middle game, and parlay it into ten hours of experience. “You could tell a story, you could make enemies.”

Crytek looked at things like the gravity gun or bullet time as things they could relate to. But for the nano suit, it all started with research into science-fact.
